Hef Saves the HOLLYWOOD Sign
April 27th 2010 15:52
Hugh Hefner swoops in to save the day. The American icon donated the remaining $900,000 dollars of the $12.5 million needed to preserve the 138 acres surrounding the HOLLYWOOD sign. The landmark stands on Mt. Hood an area once owned by tycoon Howard Hughes and was recently up for sale for the development of residential homes.
This isn’t the first time Hef has pitched in. in 1978 he bought the letter “Y” of the sign and restored it to prevent its deterioration. This time, Heffner is a humongous contributer in the fund raising drive which will turn the area into a public park instead of multi-million dollar homes. "My childhood dreams and fantasies came from the movies, and the images created in Hollywood had a major influence on my life and Playboy," Hefner said during a press conference. California govener Arnold Schwarzenegger also put his two cents in: “"It's a symbol of dreams and a symbol of opportunity and hope. The Hollywood sign will welcome dreamers, artists and Austrian bodybuilders for generations to come." Schwarzenegger said private donations came from all 50 states, 10 foreign countries, Tiffany & Co. and a number of individuals, including J. Paul Getty heir Aileen Getty, Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks.
The deadline to save the HOLLYWOOD sign is April 30th. Hefner’s contribution came not a moment too soon. The area will now be added to Griffith Park, the park made famous in James Dean’s Rebel Without a Cause. Griffith Park is also seen in video games like Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, and Vampire: The Masquerade.
