It was announced on XM Radio that conjoined twin Brittany Hensel is engaged. The connected twins were born in Minnesota and sky-rocketed to fame the moment they were born. To heighten peoples’ curiosity, Brittany and Abby filmed a popular documentary for the TLC channel and have been seen in various esteemed magazines.
Though Brittany is engaged, Abby (her other half) is not engaged. They also have separate driver’s licenses, favorite foods, distinct personalities and so forth. So why is it so shocking to know one is engaged? What about sex? Let’s face it. Sex is the question on everyone’s mind. It’s not like one can leave while the other is having sex. Will both enjoy the sex together? If they have children whose child will it be? I suppose what is awkward to us is normal to them. Best of luck Brittany, and congratulations on your engagement.

These girls really are two separate people- two minds, to hearts... sure, they share the reproductive organs, but all that really means is if one was to fall pregnant the other is like a semi-surrogate mother I guess.

I rarely think of other people having sex, I'm really not interested; but with something so very unusual ... my mind goes into overdrive. That's pretty normal, I'd say. No-one was making assumptions, PMC, simply throwing a few thoughts into the air, as people do.
As for the implication that the twins parents might not let them live: I was told years ago by nurses that when babies are born with deformities such as this it is left up to the parents to decide if they are to live. I just assumed everyone knew this. If more people looked beyond 'normal' then we would have many more strange looking people. Have you ever seen the 1932 film 'Freaks'?
I'm sure these girls have plenty of more important things to deal with in their lives than to worry about a few people discussing how they would have sex.

Well thank god Teresa, in Australia we've a multitude of specialist facilities (institutions) where these "strange" people are locked up and kept away from us "normal" people.
I don't know Teresa, why do people get so worked about about off-hand comments on blog sites? You seem to be a prime example--- and if you have an issue with any of my, OFF-HAND comments, perhaps the best person to address these with is me, not just random bloggers whom have no control over me as the individual entity that I am (just a thought!).

So it was important to make that distinction for the purpose of marriage.
In reality its a two for one deal for the husband.
My advice is not to rush into marriage but live with them and see how things go.

I think that both of them know that their situation is different from most americans and this way they can both get a legal christian marriage. I am sure that God knows the situation they are presented [although I am a believer in science] and it would be improper for them to have two separate husbands sharing the same vagina--because it would complicate things between both sisters and the men as to producing offspring with different dna from the same organism and its also incest for both of them being both mom and aunt [atleast from a religous point of view]. The government will not allow one man to marry both of them because that would open up a large array of problems with the homosexual marriage situation.
I think that the man 'britney' is marrying will be a great husband to both britney and abigail. He is probably one of their close friends and the three of them have come to terms with the fate. I think that he is getting two special women who will love him unconditionally.
This family situation is great because there will be three incomes and when the kids are born, they may have to deal with teasing, as I am bure brit and abby have come to terms with over the years, but will be better cared for than most children in the american population.
Besides, individuals how have come before and after me, sex is a private matter! Exactly how do you have sex with your spouse? How deep is your wife's vagina or how big is your husband's penis? Uncomfortable, right? Let them decide how they will have sex because its really not a public matter.

They are indeed separate individuals that just happen to have their bodies conjoined. They each have separate heads, mouths, esophaguses, stomachs, and lungs although the lungs facing each other in the middle conjoin toward the bottom lobe. Their small intestines start out as separate then conjoin and from there on, everything is one. One large intestine, one bladder, one colon, one reproductive system. They do have 3 kidneys and an XL conjoined liver. They each control their respective sides of the body -- Abby controls the right arm and right leg, Brittany controls the left arm and left leg. When they took their driving tests, Abby controls the pedals and the shifter, Brittany controls the turn signal and the windshield wipers, and they both steer. They accomplish this easily because they've grown up since birth learning how to coordinate their halfs of the body -- they walk, run, swim on a swim team, play softball, play volleyball, type e-mails together, etc. If you spent every waking moment with someone from birth to almost 19 years of age, you would learn to be coordinated with them too. Plus twins have that special psychological connection, thus they understand each other and are on the same wavelength. It's no different than identical twins who live across the country from each other and somehow just "know" when something is wrong with the other. These two just happen to be conjoined. The girls had to be authorized 2 driver's licenses because they have 2 separate social security numbers, thus the government identifies them as 2 separate people. I would assume that this also means they cannot marry the same man as it would be illegal. HOWEVER, this would be something that would be individually decided by the girls AND the court system as needed -- just like when they discussed if they got pulled over and recieved a traffic ticket...they would let the court decide who would get the ticket based on the infraction and who was controlling the corresponding part of the vehicle (or if both would get a ticket). As for sex -- because there's a split right down the middle of the body in terms of nerve endings, they both would feel it. And for their sake, I hope both would be able to get enjoyment out of it. If you think about it, they have done all intimate things together since birth -- urinating, defecating, dealing with their period, bathing, dressing, etc...sex would be right along the same lines and probably not bother either to have to be present. If the other didn't want to partake in the act, they would either not go through with it or the non-participant would probably put on headphones and tune it out or something. Just like other conjoined twins do when one is doing something the other doesn't want to be part of. It's something they will have to decide how to handle between themselves and also with their respective partner(s), who obviously will have had to think about that situation and be comfortable with it before they even started dating either of them.
In regard to the comment above from whoever said they were told by nurses that parents could choose whether deformed babies live or not...that only applies to babies with massive deformities that require them to be on some kind of life support -- respirator, dialysis, etc. Parents can choose to pull the plug and allow nature to take its course. In the case with Abby and Britney, they were perfectly functional right at birth and did NOT require any kind of life support, thus they lived on their own and thrived. You cannot choose to "euthanize" them like an unwanted dog. That's disturbing. Also, their parents had no idea they were expecting twins let alone conjoined girls. They were expecting one baby and were surprised right along with the doctors when they pulled Abby and Brittany out.
It doesn't make anyone a "freak" to wonder these types of things about these 2 extraordinary ladies. It is human nature to be curious and inquisitive about things out of the ordinary, and doctors are just as curious about them as the public. However, it has been the parents' and the girls' choice to not be subjected to medical testing unless medically necessary for health reasons. They don't feel that they should be a science experiment, they just want to do everything they can to live normal lives as much as possible and when situations arise, make the best of it and compromise. I think they should be APPLAUDED for their hard work, dedication, and courage.

As a single person in a single body, I too have a difficult time imagining how both the physical and emotional issues play out in terms of their dating and marriage. No matter what there will have to be some degree of sharing. However, as the lovely person above me pointed out, their conception of intimacy is very different from all of ours, so it doesn't have to make sense to us.
Please, go easy on these ladies. They are beautiful, graceful, and strong, and highly committed to living as normal a life as all their peers do. They accomplish that goal magnificently. If you haven't watched their documentaries, look them up on YouTube: "Joined for Life" 1 through 5. They explain a lot about their lives and you see the remarkable way in which they live in their very unique situation. Anyone who is hating on them will probably feel a lot differently after they watch these. Be kind; they are just other human beings like us, they feel just as we do. Treat them as you would anyone else.

I'm not surprised that Brittany is the first to be engaged, from the Documentaries, I got the impression that she's the more romantic/emotional of the two.
It's not our business to invade Brittany's sex life, I mean, none of you would want to tell the world what you do with your Boyfriend when you're alone.

Good healthy questions are not about "how" they have sex, but if they agree to it. What if one doesn't agree and her twin has sex - isn't that rape? If one is married and the other not, isn't that illegal in about 49 states?
The children - whose are they, especially if two husbands are actively involved. Will a DNA test reveal the real mother?
Besides, someone blogged that Brittany controls a leg. From what I have read Abby controls both legs and Brittany controls only the left arm. I would think walking would not be as graceful if each controlled a leg.
Which gets me to my next point. Brittany only feels the upper right part of the torso and right arm. Does she feel anything below the waist? And if Brittany doesn't, that would mean Brittany's future husband would only be giving pleasure to Abby during sex with her.
Please clarify if you have better info.

The documentary also explained what organs are shared, and their entire reproductive system is shared. That means that they would probably sense equally, and that the DNA in their eggs would be the same. So if they both have children with different husbands, their children would biologically be half-siblings. But Abby and Brittany are legally two individual people with distinct driver's licenses and Social Security numbers. So their children would be legally the child of the husband in question and whichever mother's name was put on the birth certificate. The father of the child would be determined by DNA testing, so his wife would naturally be written down on the birth certificate as the mother.
I know the idea of having 2 husbands with 2 wives sharing 1 body seems really weird when we think about the sensations and intimacy of sex, but as one astute commenter here pointed out, they are such an exception that things that seem weird to us are just normal to them. They and their husbands would obviously come to an understanding,

I also believe that quite possibly Brittany doesn't feel either leg as well, as control and feelings usually go together. I know the spinal columns are completely separate and I speculate that only Abby's spinal column are connected to the nerves that go below the coccyx. The fact that walking is so graceful really supports this theory.
I appreciate waht you said, "that it is well documented that Brittany controls the left side of the body", but I have not seen any video, documentation that support that.

As a matter of fact, BRITNEY is MARRIED Now. They have often said they are looking forward to becoming Mothers. I would imagine that their Conception would be done by I.V.F., and that they would have a Caesarian Birth (mainly for Safety Reasons); but I could be wrong, and if they can have natural sexual Intercourse and Conceive, and then give Birth naturally, well GOOD LUCK to them. The only real exception to your comments is that when, or if, they have sexual intercourse it's not going to be easy for one girl to "turn that blind eye.
It has been made clear that the each girl controls and feels their half of the body. Shares the senses of that area of there body. So if one girl has sex, both feel it. So if one doesn't want sex, that would constitute rape. So the only other option here is, that both girls "want" sex.
It's not a problem for me, because maybe I am part perv, but many see this as totally unacceptable behavior. Essentially it will be a threesome every time they have sex with a guy. I guess one girl could volunteer to be knocked-out. I was going to say drugged, but that would affect both girls. I'm not trying to be rude and it's obvious that threesomes are not socially accepted by many. So everyone could,just turn a blind eye or deal with it.
Apparently, not only do they have senses around and in their portion the vagina, it is assumed that if one girl climaxes the other one would as well. I really hope they have a happy life. But,...in all honesty....if it were me and my conjoined twin were to get married, I would probably ask the doctors if there were a way that I could take some sort of sleeping aid or use some type of meditatopm technique. After reading a majority of the posts, I would offer this......
These two extraordinary girls had not choice but to discuss the ramifications of what dating and marrying would mean. As with any relationship, there would have to be considerable negotiations to work out the logistics. The girls had to discuss with themselves AND the boy as to how it all would work, physicially AND emotionally.
As for the sex........ well,.... like it or not...... they are all in it together. The only advice I can offer is that if one of the girls has a headache, realize that sex is GREAT for that. Alright, now when it comes to sex, they both have to be in it, whether they like it or not. And I don't think they will have an issue with that or worry that it is incest or so. They have no choice but to enjoy it together, which must be almost normal to them. For the fiancée: I guess as you get to know these two you get to know them not as one, but you get to know them simultaneously. Who you fall in love with, you can't choose. I'm not particularly religious and I don't generally get worked up about things, to be honest. I'm pretty even tempered.
But some of these posters on here should be absolutely ashamed of themselves. Abby and Brittney are not monsters/a monster. They are not 'one person, rather two people.
Finger prints don't make a person. Brains do. And I doubt their condition is any more genetic than having normal twins are. To the poster that insisted they were really one person - Do you even know how conjoined twins are created? They start off the EXACT same way as your typical identical twins do. The only difference is that instead of one egg splitting into two, it never fully splits - Hence a set of twins who are conjoined. So unless you feel that identical twins are actually one person, then your logic does not apply to Abby and Brittany.
That being said, I hope wish these women the best of luck. It should go without saying that they have a very special relationship with each other that is absolutely impossible for any of us to have with another human being. The strength it must take to wake up every day and deal with the ignorance of humanity must be difficult, but I commend them for continuing to live their lives on their own terms.

As a parent of 3 sons and 2 daughters I have to say I would be very upset if I found out one of my children was engaged or even dating someone like this. I would feel very hurt. I would be humiliated and I would beg them to reconsider and to not have children with them/her. No matter how pure your intentions other people would question your motives. I know this because I would judge their intentions too... I know it isnt right but it is the truth.
As rude as the post was a few post up he/she was correct about her parents creating an idealized view of the world.
From what I understand these girls are going to college soon. Probably away from home. This is when they are really going to be hit with reality. I wouldn't want to deal with the heartache they will deal with when they are no longer in some small, rural town.
Where they grew up everyone knew about them. So it was no big deal when they went out. Now they will be in some college town with people who will take their pictures and stare and point and whisper. This is going to be a harsh realization for them.
Honestly the whole sex thing isn't even the beginning of the issue. Now I am gonna talk about sexuality here so if you have a problem with it do not read any further.
Now really think about this. Put yourself in this situation. Remember when you were younger and started discovering things like masturbation? Now imagine your sibling is right next to you, not only watching, but enjoying it too. This can not be a good situation. It has to mess with your sex life and your mind. And no matter how cute we think it is that these girls are trying to be normal... when it comes to sex/marriage a good hearted man may love one of them but their marriage will always involve the other twin.
And it is also cute to think of them as being moms but the harsh reality is that they probably wont live past middle age. (as another rude poster acutely noticed) Their children will have to deal with Why does your mom have two heads? And God knows what else they will hear. Just read some of these comments... that is what some people really think. And if people think it, they often say it. Some people do stare and take pictures. That will never stop. EVER!
And last but not least there is the health issue. Sure right now they are healthy. But odds are now that they are adults the medical issues will begin soon. Add a pregnancy to that and you have a recipe for some bad health issues.
Death with conjoined twins is a truly terrible thing. I read up on it a while back and I read a great interview with the doctor of conjoined twins that had died while under his care. (i do not remember his name... sorry) But he said what happens is one twin dies. He said it is way worse than most deaths.
One twin dies then the other twin not only has to deal with the death of a sibling but the knowledge that their death will be coming very shortly. Usually within 2 days. They have to sedate the surviving twin until they pass too. It is truly horrible.
So all of this flowery "arnt-they-cute" stuff is nice but there are true issues wrapped up in all this.

Next, if one of them dies, they both die and that's obvious. Why ? Because they share too much, in particulary blood vessels. Plus,... they are borned that way, they don't know any other way to live ! We are all making a big deal of the "intimacy-thing" but they don't seem to conceive "intimacy" the same way as we do. Same as for "indivuality". I think if tomorrow they were going to wake up and be 'pouf' separated they would feel terribly sad and alone more than happy, they said they don't want to be separated.
Plus, in 20 years, you won't make me believe, they never talked about the sex issues, especially when they were teens, because i'm pretty sure they masturbate ! No matter how you look at it, they bathe and use the toilet together, I just don't get why sex should (would) be different. Does that make it incest ? Well, since they share the same body they most likely want to pleasure themself and not their sister so I don't think we can really talk about incest here... Now I dont know if they have been diagnosed with this but when I saw their special I noticed it right away.
This explains why they seem "off". It is because they are not aware of how others perceive them. (how they perceive they way they look but how the conduct themselves around other people)
This diagnoses maybe easily overlooked because people want them to be happy go lucky. But people that have this often have issues with understanding basic things about human interaction. One of those issues is personal space... Which they probably would have an issue with that considering they are always with someone.
Never being alone can really mess with people. Never showering alone. Going to the bathroom. Masturbation, especially when you first start masturbating. All of this is important things for people to do in private.
Regardless of how cute you may think they are... And they are fun... They will probably have serious relationship issues. They can, will, and probably already have learned to deal with it a bit but it will always be a struggle for them.

I hope the twins, their friends, and their family never run across this page, and that if they do, they don’t take this mean spirited BS to heart. Of course, I’m sure they’ve heard it all before, from other thoughtless small-minded morons.
A few points:
1. Most love comes from friendship. Most likely, they married somebody who knows and loves them, and sees them the same way you see your own friends and family. To automatically assume that a person, willing to accept an unusual situation to be with the person(s) he loves, must be a perv is pretty small of you.
2. Like many twins, those two girls probably have a relationship with each other that most of us (especially single children like me) can hardly imagine. Thankfully, they seem to get along really well, and having a sibling and friend so close, in such an intimate relationship, for your entire life, likely gives them a level of familiarity and companionship that will see them through anything together. While their marriage will certainly have interesting group dynamics, I wouldn’t think it would be much stranger than most, however it looks from the outside.
3. I imagine they also have an extremely advanced ability to understand and manage relationships with other people – sort of like people with many siblings (in general) but much more so. I hope they do become councilors – I imagine they will be among the best ever.
4. I could be wrong, but I imagine that the husband married them both, and they had to put a single name on the paper because the system isn’t designed to handle this situation. That may shock your superstitious judeo-christian psudo-morals, but the laws and customs centered on monogamy are based on some pretty flawed ideas created during the dark ages by a relatively small group of arrogant, narrow-minded, power-hungry religious rulers.
Though most people in our society are canalized into believing so, monogamy isn’t the only, or necessarily the best, way to manage relations. There have been many societies, or smaller groups of people, throughout history who have succeeded with any number of other configurations. In this case, they really have no choice, but even if they did, there is nothing wrong with non-monogamous relationships. The biggest problem they will face will be from society – from small-minded people who believe that “their” way is “the only” way.
5. I know the anonymity of the Internet is pretty cool, but really, would you all be saying this sort of crap in person? The things you say matter here too.
6. While anyone will have some curiosity as to how they do things, for people to fixate on details to the point of completely objectifying the people involved really is a little sick. These are people, and they will deal with the world as best they can, just like any other people.
So here are some possible answers to some of the questions that have been asked here, taken from a little imagination and humanity:
The children, if any, will belong to both mothers and the father. To ask which one is the mother is really one of the stupidest questions I’ve ever heard – they almost certainly share DNA, and they definitely share the reproductive organs. I know the idea of a baby with three parents will stretch some of the small-minded people a little, but it’s really not that complicated. There is no reason they can’t love their children and raise them, just like anyone else, and they will likely do it in whatever way they find works best.
To ask questions about incest is almost as dumb as asking which is the mother. Really people? You afraid they’re going to mate with each other and produce offspring with double recessive genes?
Yes, the children will be teased. Children are teased and bullied every day for any number of reasons. These children will have parents that are quite familiar with the phenomenon, prepared to help them deal with it, and will probably come out the other side with a goodly bit of character. I’m sure they will also have plenty of friends.
In the event they do, or don’t, love, or hate, or marry, multiple men, they will all work out whatever suits them best, as people have done since the beginning of time.
As for the sex, I imagine they’ll do whatever they like, and it will be wonderful, and they’ll enjoy it, as folks usually do. Yep. Just like everyone else. Except maybe the intolerant religious folks who are dying of guilt and hate themselves for their wickedness.
Yes, they may get sick someday. Any number or horrible things may happen. They may die in a car accident. For that matter, YOU may get sick or die in a car accident. Quick! Stop living your life right away, just in case! Be sure not to get married or make any friends.
There are other answers to all the other questions asked here too. Maybe you should think of them before posting such nasty questions and comments? A little imagination and humanity should make that an easy enough process…

They thought they could say or do anything and then when people were offended by their behavior they would imply that it was because they were conjoined. Nope. They were just annoying and kind of rude.
They talked over teachers and gossiped about people. They were always doing that thing that girls do where they are nice to your face and then talk about you behind your back.
So everyone that thinks these girls are so wonderful should think about the fact that some people are just not likable people. These girls fall into that catagory.
