"Celebrity is a mask that eats into the face. As soon as one is aware of being 'somebody', to be watched and listened to with extra interest, input ceases, and the performer goes blind and deaf in his over-animation. One can either see or be seen." ~John Updike

Betty White's Naked Dog

April 20th 2010 19:15

Betty White, Pink's Hot Dogs

Yesterday, Betty White was honored with her own hot dog, the “Naked Dog”. The famous and delicious Pink’s Hot Dogs in Hollywood opened a new location at Universal’s City Walk. I’m not sure why there’s been so much buzz around Betty White and her naked dog, but people seem to find it funny that an elderly lady will giddily pose next to a phallic looking piece of food. "They said they wanted to name one after me, but I said I don't take anything on it. So, they called it the naked hot dog," said White. The six-time Emmy winner is better known for her roles on The Golden Girls and The Mary Tyler Moore show. Her fight for animal rights has also been recognized throughout the years. All proceeds from the new restaurant’s opening goes to the LA’s Department of Animal Services animal shelters.

Like Betty White, Pink’s Hot Dogs has nearly been around since The Great Depression. Paul and Betty Pink started selling hot dogs from a hotdog stand near the corner of Melrose and La Brea in 1939. By 1946, the Pinks build a small building on the same spot the hot dog stand rested resulting in today’s expanding Pink’s Hot Dog empire.

The menu looks delicious and reasonably priced. A simple chili dog is $3.10, whereas the America the Beautiful Dog (12” Jalapeno dog, pastrami, bacon, lettuce, and chopped tomato) is $6.45. other celebrity dogs include the Martha Stewart Dog (10" Stretch Dog, relish, onions, bacon chopped tomatoes, sauerkraut & sour cream), the Rosie O’ Donnel Long Island Dog (10" Stretch Dog, topped with mustard, onions, chili and sauerkraut) and the Ozzy (Osborne)Spicy Dog (Spicy Polish Dog, Nacho cheese, American cheese, grilled onions, guacamole & chopped tomatoes). Sound tasty? I thought so. Since I started writing this article I’ve eaten three hot dogs.

Both White and Pink’s careers are branching/reaching out to a younger generation. You can see White in May 8th showing of Saturday Night Live and her hilarious role in the movie The Proposal. And Pink’s hot dogs are now available at Knott’s Berry Farm, Planet Hollywood, LAX and various area fairs.
